PhD - The Prelude

How will my graduation photo look?
How will my graduation photo look?

It's been 13 years since I graduated from the Global Development and Social Justice Masters of Arts program at St. John's University in Rome, Italy and 15 years since completing a Bachelors of Science in Actuarial Science with a minor certificate in Government and Politics at the same school in Queens, New York. Since then, I have made two humans, built a life, written a book, built a business and done so much more.

Right now, I am standing at the foot of a mountain and staring up to a pinnacle that seems so far away and yet, I have never been closer to it in my life. The day that I decided I would no longer continue on the path to becoming an actuary was the day that I decided to pursue doctoral studies. More than a decade later, here I am.

While I won't complete the St. John's trifecta and obtain all three degrees there, I am certainly pleased to once again find myself reconnecting to my roots within the Vincentian Mission. As I have said for years, I am not Catholic but I am Vincentian. After years of volunteering and participating in student leadership, I fully adopted the teachings of St. Vincent de Paul as they aligned with my own understanding of servant leadership. St. Vincent also challenged my view of service as going from a full cup to an empty or "less fortunate cup" and to truly take on the experience as an equal exchange where both parties have gained. Another challenge that I accepted was the importance of reflection after an opportunity to give because it's not enough to believe the exchange was equal, we must also be introspective enough to identify where and how this exchange has occurred and to understand the responsibility of having received this gift.

This worldview has informed my approach to business and nonprofit leadership and now underpins my research as my life brings me full circle, back to education.

It's always been about education for me, even when I couldn't articulate that. Since I was fourteen years old, I have known that my mission, calling, purpose in life is to build a parallel school system in the Caribbean so that families would finally have a real choice for the best education for their children. It's a simple sentence, packed with layers of required expertise. It took me nearly 20 years to formulate that sentence. Now, equipped with experience in business development and nonprofit leadership, I can turn my attention to understanding what needs to happen in and around the classroom.

As I learn to ask better questions and dig deeper into the current information, I am happy to share my journey with you and encourage you to return to your first love; that thing that has always been your passion, even if no one else knew or understood; that thing that drives you and keeps you coming back after life hits you hard; that thing that gives you peace and reminds you who you are.
